Talk on the Nation’s “Sick Care” System

“SYNAGOGUE SCHOLARS” SERIES AT B’NAI SHOLOM CONCLUDES WITH

TALK ON THE NATION’S “SICK CARE” SYSTEM

B’nai Sholom Reform Congregation in Albany concludes its current “Synagogue Scholars” lecture series with a discussion by Dr. David Ray, chief of adult medicine at Albany’s Whitney M. Young Health Center, on what is meant by “good health.”

Ray will deliver his talk, “Zei Gesundt! What Do We Mean By Good Health?” during the congregation’s Friday, April 12, Shabbat service. The service and program, open to all who wish to worship and learn, begin at 8 p.m. B’nai Sholom is located at 420 Whitehall Road, Albany.

The health care system is a constant topic of conversation.  But the U.S. doesn’t have a “health care” system, it has a “sick care” system, according to Ray.

“There is considerable evidence that the nation’s approach to disease really consists of closing the barn door after the horse has left, gone to another continent and died,” he said.

The intent of Ray’s talk will be to tie together the ethics and the science of creating a truly healthy society.

Ray practices internal medicine at Whitney M. Young Health Center in Albany, where he is chief of adult medicine and medical director of the HIV care program. He specializes in clinical research and treatment of HIV and AIDS. He has volunteered as a physician in Limpopo Province and Lesotho, South Africa, and in Karnataka Province, India. Locally, he has been active in the Capital District Alliance for Universal Healthcare and Physicians for a National Health Plan. Ray and his wife, Dr. Mimi Bruce, live in Menands.

Begun in 2004, the “Synagogue Scholars” lecture series spotlights B’nai Sholom congregants who are recognized scholars in their fields. The popular program will return in 2014.
