B’nai Sholom to Screen Mouth-Watering Documentary “Deli Man”

B’nai Sholom Reform Congregation in Albany will present a screening of “Deli Man,” a documentary that looks at the history and culture of delicatessens in the United States.

“Deli Man” will be shown Saturday, January 16, at 7:30 p.m. at B’nai Sholom, 420 Whitehall Road, Albany, New York. Refreshments will be available. Suggested contribution: $5.

For some, delicatessen food is close to a religious experience. Director Erik Greenberg Anjou’s 2015 film explores Jewish culture as it reflects the heart of a vital ethnic history. In Houston, third-generation deli man Ziggy Gruber has built arguably the finest delicatessen restaurant in the U.S: Kenny & Ziggy’s. His story – augmented by those of such iconic delis as Katz’s, 2nd Avenue Deli, Nate ’n Al, Carnegie and the Stage – embodies a tradition indelibly linked to its savory, nostalgic foods. Such luminaries as Larry King, Jerry Stiller, Fyvush Finkel, Freddie Roman and Alan Dershowitz as well as various deli owners express their love for the culture and the food. Indulge in the deli foods America loves and learn about the traditions that make deli one of America’s great cuisines.

The New York Jewish Week called “Deli Man” “as much fun as you will have in a movie this year, but eat first or you’ll go out of your mind.” Writing in The Washington Post, Michael O’Sullivan said, “Like a fat slab of pastrami, ‘Deli Man’ is the cinematic equivalent of comfort food: warm, generous and made with love.”

The 91-minute film is rated PG-13 (language).
