NEW OFFICERS AND BOARD CHOSEN
B’nai Sholom Reform Congregation today announced the election of new officers and members to the board of trustees.
At the 44th annual meeting, the congregation elected Elizabeth “Libby” Liebschutz of Delmar, president; Barbara Devore of Delmar, president-elect; Ann Shapiro of Albany, vice president; Joan Savitt of Albany, finance vice president; Joel Bloom of Loudonville, secretary; and Eleanor Davis of Albany, treasurer. The meeting was held recently at the synagogue, located at 420 Whitehall Road, Albany.
Liebschutz succeeds Dr. Mimi Bruce as president. Devore, Shapiro and Savitt are newly elected to executive positions; Bloom and Davis are continuing in their posts.
The congregation also elected Joshua Brody of Delmar, Kevin Chorost of Albany, Jeff Klamka of Slingerlands and Martie Teumim of Delmar to new positions as trustees. Continuing on the board are Deb Adler of Delmar, Mimi Bruce of Menands, Mark Silverbush of Selkirk, Brian Sinkoff of Slingerlands and Hana Sullenger of Troy.
Rabbi Donald P. Cashman has been the congregation’s spiritual leader since 1985 and serves on the board ex officio.
“B’nai Sholom has offered wonderful opportunities to me and my family to learn and to grow, and we’ve developed so many strong relationships there with people of all ages and interests,” said Liebschutz. “Mimi Bruce has done an amazing job leading us for the past two years, and I’m dedicated to ensuring that B’nai Sholom continues to thrive as an institution where the next generation can find meaning, community and opportunities for service.”

Liebschutz has held a variety of leadership roles at B’nai Sholom, including chair of the ritual, youth, and adult education committees. She also founded and chaired committees responsible for High Holiday youth services for elementary school age children and Kids Congregation, a worship and activity program for very young children during Shabbat services. She taught in the religious school for several years and served on the religious school committee. She enjoys singing and occasionally leads the singing as cantorial soloist at B’nai Sholom’s Shabbat services. Most recently, Liebschutz served for two years as president-elect.
Liebschutz has worked at the New York State Department of Public Service since 1993 as a lawyer and administrative law judge and has served as chief administrative law judge since 2007. Prior to state service, she engaged in private law practice with firms in Albany and Washington. A native of Elmira, Liebschutz holds degrees from Cornell University and Duke University School of Law.
Liebschutz moved to the Capital Region in 1990 and has resided in Delmar since 1991, where she previously chaired the Town of Bethlehem’s Citizens Advisory Committee on Conservation. She and her husband, David, have two grown daughters: Jen and Rebecca.
