B’nai Sholom Reform Congregation is opening its doors to welcome all for the High Holy Days with complimentary tickets to all services during the Days of Awe.
The congregation once again offers visitors and guests the opportunity to attend High Holy Day services at no charge. They can attend any or all of the services either as guest of a congregation member, who will obtain tickets for them, or by arranging to receive tickets directly from the synagogue office. Guests also may enjoy B’nai Sholom’s reception after the Rosh Hashanah evening service, lunch at a congregant’s home after Rosh Hashanah morning service and the break-fast following the concluding service on Yom Kippur.
For families with young children, B’nai Sholom offers a specially tailored program for children in grades K-4 on both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mornings, and babysitting is available at those times for children ages 4 and under. The babysitting requires advanced registration.
The High Holy Days begin with Rosh Hashanah on Sunday evening, October 2.
“B’nai Sholom welcomes everyone for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and beyond. Whether you join us every week, haven’t been to a synagogue in a while or have never been, we hope B’nai Sholom will satisfy your craving for meaningful worship among a friendly community during these Days of Awe,” said congregation president Libby Liebschutz.
Rabbi Donald Cashman, B’nai Sholom’s spiritual leader since 1985, has woven Star Trek themes into this year’s High Holy Day sermons, in recognition of the show’s 50th anniversary. “The Final Frontier” on Rosh Hashanah eve will explore the sacredness of time in our lives. The following day, “To Boldly Go” will reflect on the Jewish foundational mission of Abraham and the boldness shown by others in Judaism. At Kol Nidrei on Yom Kippur eve, “The Prime Directive” will discuss our responsibilities to others. On Yom Kippur morning, “The Next Generation” will consider the competing needs of the individual and the community.

Rebecca Pacuk, a recent graduate of the University of Hartford’s Hartt School of Music and an Albany area native, will be the cantorial soloist for the Days of Awe. Pacuk attended B’nai Sholom during her youth, and she and the congregation are excited and honored at her return in this role. Pacuk is a music teacher in Salem, New Hampshire, and resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In addition, Elizabeth M. Huntley will return to furnish harp accompaniment to the services. She is principal harpist with the Glens Falls Symphony and has performed widely as a soloist, in regional productions and orchestras and with touring musicians. Since 1998, Huntley has been the editor of The American Harp Journal.
