A Story of Courage: Mimica Tzezana Hyman to Speak About the Jewish Community’s Survival on Greek Island During World War II

B’nai Sholom Reform Congregation in Albany will host a special presentation by Mimica Tzezana Hyman Tuesday, Sept. 29, chronicling the survival of the Jewish community on the Greek island of Zakynthos during World War II.  Tzezana Hyman’s father and his family lived on the island.

 Tzezana Hyman’s presentation, “Song of Life,” will begin at 2 p.m. at the synagogue.

 Tzezana Hyman has been doing presentations on the life-affirming events that took place during the war on Zakynthos since 2007.  The entire Jewish community on the island was protected from the Nazis by the bishop, the mayor, and other residents.  As a result, all 275 Jewish lives on Zakynthos were saved.

 Tzezana Hyman’s presentation of this amazing story of courage consists of a summary of Jewish life on Zakynthos in the days before WWII, stories of her father and a screening of a short documentary.

 A resident of the Hudson Valley, Tzezana Hyman is an artist, educator and advocate who shares her family’s historic experience during the Holocaust to keep the memory of Greek Jewish survival alive.  She also serves on the board of the American Friends of the Jewish Museum of Greece.
